Cataloguing Training Exercises

Library staff can use the Sitka Training Server to work through these exercises.

Exercise 1 → Setting Search Preferences

It is very important to make sure you are searching the entire database whenever you are searching for cataloguing purposes.

  1. Go to Cataloging → Search the Catalogue
  2. Click Search Preferences
  3. Set the Default Search Library to the top of the consortium. (This is Sitka on the live server and Green Land Consortium on the training server.)
  4. Set the Preferred Library to match the location the workstation is registered to

Exercise 2 → Add Holdings

  1. Go to Cataloging → Search the Catalogue
  2. Click on “Numeric Search” → Search by ISBN [9780316002929]
  3. Click on the Title of the item from the search result, this will take you to the Record details
    screen
  4. Click on the MARC Edit or MARC View tab to view the MARC record
  5. Click Add Holdings
  6. Add a call number and barcode
  7. Edit Item Attributes
    1. Shelving Location
    2. Circulating Library (if multiple branches)
    3. Circulation Modifier
    4. Price
  8. Click Save & Exit

Exercise 3 → Create Holdings Templates

  1. Go to Administration → Local Administration → Holdings Template Editor
  2. Create an item template for Adult Fiction
    1. Enter a template name
    2. Edit Item Attributes for Shelving Location and Circulation Modifier
    3. Save the template
  3. Create 2 more holdings templates

Exercise 4 → Z39.50 Import Bibliographic Records to the Database

  1. Go to Cataloging → Import Record from Z39.50
  2. Under Service and Credentials, check the box beside Local Catalogue, Library of Congress,
    Illume, and Vancouver Public Library.
  3. Click on Save as Default
  4. Under Query, enter your Search Terms (Preferably ISBN)
  5. Click on Search
  6. Your results will be displayed in the bottom portion of the screen
  7. Choose the record from the results list that you would like to import
  8. Click Edit then Import
  9. Edit the MARC record and then click Import
  10. Add a holding to the imported record (follow steps from Exercise 2)

Exercise 5 → Create a New MARC record

  1. Go to Cataloging → Create New Marc Record
  2. Click into the drop down menu to see available templates
  3. Select Sitka_book_rda
  4. Click Load
  5. Complete the MARC record as per cataloguing standards and Sitka cataloguing policy.
  6. Click Save
  7. Add a holding to the imported record (follow steps from Exercise 2)

Exercise 6 → Replace Barcode

  1. Select an item from the catalogue.
  2. Go to Circulation → Item Status [F5]
  3. Enter the Barcode
  4. Click on Submit
  5. Click on Actions → Edit → Replace Barcodes
  6. Enter the new barcode and click Submit
